30 Portraits, 30 Days | Documentary Family Photography in San Francisco Bay Area

Each year, to commemorate my kids’ birthdays, I make a short film or small photo project that aims to capture who they are at this moment in time. The past few years have been all about making short films and this year I wanted to try something different. Also, because my kiddos are getting bigger, and less interested in collaborating in these projects, I wanted to make something that felt fun for them as well.

My son Sebastian and I hatched this new project that we’re calling 30 in 30 (Sebastian says we need to think of a better name and I don’t disagree). The project involves making a daily portrait during the month leading up to the birthday and each one has to feel different. The images were so creatively satisfying to make and Sebastian seemed to enjoy the process as well. I sometimes got reminders from them that I hadn’t done the daily picture yet. ;)

I love how this series captures Sebastian’s quiet storm Virgo energy, as well as their silly side. Never a kid to make a cheesy smile (and for that I’m thankful) and often a kid that points out pretty light or cool foliage. I love every image we made but am giving you a sample of some favorites below. I love collaborating with this kid - in art and in life! I love you so much, Sebastian - happy 10th birthday!!!
